Very rare complete set of Voetius’
Selectaedisputationestheologicae.
AlthoughVoetiusmaynothavebeenthedirect author
of these disputations, he certainly can be considered as their
auctor intellectualis.
He supervised the preparation of the
theses, presided over the disputations, and finally approved them before publication. This procedure was common
in Voetius’ days and allowed for collecting disputations in volumes such as the
Selectae disputationes theologicae
under
the name of the presiding professor. Containing no less than 358 extensive disputations on a wide variety of subjects,
the five sturdy volumes surpass by far that which is offered in popular textbooks like the
Synopsis purioris theologiae,
both in scope and in depth. The disputations are a prime example of the scholastic method of teaching practical
orthodoxy and were of major importance to the development of Reformed dogmatic theology. - Last leaf of the
preliminary pages of volume 1 with the often lacking portrait of the author inserted opposite the title page, upper
corners of last 200 leaves of volume 1 stained, and some minor marginal repairs.
