First Latin edition of one of Voetius’ principal works. Voetius was professor of theology at the University of Utrecht
and is known as one of the leading representatives of Reformed scholasticism. However, being on the one hand a
reformed scholastic using a methodical and philosophical approach in his studies, Voetius also emphasized to his
students that theological learning should be integrated with personal piety and spiritual discipline. This other side
of his teaching was already presented in his inaugural address held in 1634 (
De pietate cum scientia coniungenda
) and
was further developed in his treatise above. Intended as an academic handbook for future pastors, Voetius’
Exercitia
pietatis
brought together everything he had taught in the preceding thirty years, dealing with prayer, conversion,
repentance, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, Sabbath observance, temptation, dying well, religious exercises in the
family, and much more besides.
