Very rare first and only French edition of Lucas Osiander’s
Institutes of the Christian religion
, published particularly for
the churches in France and the Low Countries. Lucas Osiander, son of the Nuremberg reformer Andreas Osiander,
spent nearly all his career in Stuttgart as court preacher and councillor to Duke Ludwig of Württemberg (1554-1593).
He was a prolific and versatile author, known for his exegetical work and his contributions to church history and
hymnology. His
Institutes
is one of his main theological works and contains a thorough exposition of the Lutheran
doctrinal system. It appeared simultaneously in German and in Latin, while the Latin edition also was followed by a
second (Mömpelgard 1591) and third edition (Strasbourg 1594). - Owner’s ticket on upper pastedown, some owners’
inscriptions on upper pastedown, first endpaper, and title page, two marginal repairs (not affecting the text), and
