First and only Latin edition of Poiret’s most important and influential work. Poiret, born a French Protestant,
studied theology at the University of Basel and became pastor of the French Reformed congregation at Annweiler
in the Palatinate. During his years as minister he became more and more interested in mystical writings, finally
turning completely towards mysticism. His life was especially transformed by his encounter with the writings of the
French-Flemish mystic Antoinette Bourignon (1616-1680). Poiret lived in the Netherlands from 1680 onwards, first
in Amsterdam, where most of his works were published, and subsequently in Rijnsburg. His
Bibliotheca mysticorum
selecta
provides an inventory of and a systematic guide to mystical writings and mystical writers of all periods of
church history. It displays an astonishing acquaintance with ancient and modern mystics and contains valuable
information on some lesser-known writers.
